About the Journal

The Journal of Private Tutoring Research is a specialized academic journal established to advance the scholarly and practical development of the field of private tutoring. The Journal recognizes private tutoring as an independent domain of education and industry, and aims to accumulate systematic research on this field.
Although private tutoring has played a significant educational and economic role in Korean society for over a century, dedicated academic societies and journals focused on private tutoring have remained limited. The Journal of Private Tutoring Research seeks to establish a foundation for the scholarly investigation of private tutoring phenomena and the broader private tutoring industry.

Scope

The Journal welcomes original research covering, but not limited to, the following areas:

• Educational and Psychological Studies of Private Tutoring — learner characteristics, teaching and learning, educational outcomes, and related topics
• Studies of the Private Tutoring Industry and Organizations — academy management, instructor professionalism, organizational culture, labor environment, and related topics
• Policy and Institutional Studies on Private Tutoring — connections with national education policy, regulatory and support systems, educational inequality, and related topics
• Market and Economic Analysis of Private Tutoring — market structure, consumer behavior, industry scale, economic impact, and related topics
• Social and Cultural Studies on Private Tutoring — public perceptions, social discourse, cultural meanings, and related topics

Mission

The Journal of Private Tutoring Research aims to strengthen the academic foundation of the field and to explore how private tutoring can contribute to the national education system and to broader social and economic development. Through these efforts, the Journal seeks to foster collective scholarship within the private tutoring community and to establish the professionalism and distinct identity of private tutoring research.

Publication and Editorial Regulations

Article 1 (Title)
The Journal of Private Tutoring Research is the official journal of the Korean Association of Private Tutoring Studies (KAPTS), established for the purpose of publishing research articles by its members.

Article 2 (Frequency and Schedule of Publication)
The Journal is published twice a year, on April 20 and October 20. Special issues may be published in addition to regular issues.

Article 3 (Requirements for Publication)
Manuscripts submitted to the Journal must present original research within the Journal's scope and must not have been previously published.

Article 4 (Research Areas)
The Journal accepts manuscripts in the following research areas:

• Early Childhood (Private) Education — theoretical and applied research on early childhood (private) education
• Elementary, Middle, and High School (Private) Education — theoretical and applied research on (private) education for primary and secondary school students
• (Private) Education for College Students and Adults — theoretical and applied research on (private) education for college students and adults
• Lifelong Education — theoretical and applied research on lifelong education
• Private Tutoring in Other Countries — studies on the status and conditions of private tutoring abroad, and international comparative studies
• Other Education-Related Research — academic articles on theoretical and field-based research in education broadly, including studies in education, business administration, psychology, sociology, and other related disciplines

Article 5 (Submission Guidelines)

• Manuscripts shall be prepared in accordance with the Editorial Regulations of the Journal of Private Tutoring Research.
• For co-authored manuscripts, the corresponding author—who will serve as the primary contact during the review process—shall be listed first, followed by the names of co-authors.
• Each submission shall include an abstract (in both Korean and English), keywords (in both Korean and English; 2 to 4 keywords), and the author's name and affiliation (in both Korean and English). English names shall be written in the order of family name followed by given name (e.g., Hong, Gil-Dong).
• Manuscripts shall be prepared using Hangul (HWP) 2010 or Microsoft Word and submitted through the Journal's online submission system.
• Inquiries regarding manuscript submission may be sent by email to kapts.journal@gmail.com.
• Two manuscripts by the same author may not appear in the same issue.

Article 6 (Editorial Board)

• All matters concerning the review, editing, and publication of manuscripts shall be managed by the Editorial Board.
• The Editorial Board shall consist of up to ten members, including the Editor-in-Chief.
• The Editor-in-Chief shall be appointed by the President of the Association.
• The terms of the Editor-in-Chief and Editorial Board members shall be two years, and may be renewed or extended.
• Editorial Board members shall be appointed by the President of the Association upon the recommendation of the Editor-in-Chief, with consideration given to their active participation in the Association, research achievements, and expertise.

Article 7 (Responsibilities of the Editorial Board)

• Establishment, revision, and abolition of the Journal's editorial and publication regulations and manuscript formatting guidelines
• Selection and assignment of reviewers for submitted manuscripts
• Final decisions on the publication of submitted manuscripts
• Adjudication of and sanctions for research misconduct
• Other matters concerning the review and editing of the Journal

Article 8 (Manuscript Submission)

• Manuscripts are accepted twice per year (with the possibility of special issues) from the date of publication of the previous issue until the submission deadlines of February 20 and July 20.
• The Editorial Board may request revisions or supplementary materials based on the review results. Submitted manuscripts shall not be returned as a matter of policy.
• A confirmation notice shall be sent for each received manuscript.
• When the number of manuscripts to be published in a given issue exceeds capacity, manuscripts may be carried over to the following issue in the order of receipt.

Article 9 (Review of Manuscripts)

• The review of manuscripts shall be conducted under the supervision of the Editorial Board. Manuscripts deemed outside the scope of the Journal may be excluded from review.
• Each manuscript shall be reviewed by three reviewers with expertise relevant to the subject matter, appointed by the Editorial Board.

Article 10 (Publication Decisions)
Manuscripts submitted to the Journal shall be reviewed by three reviewers appointed by the Editorial Board, in accordance with the Review Criteria for The Journal of Private Tutoring Research. The final decision is determined as follows:

Article 11 (Order of Publication)
When the number of manuscripts approved for publication exceeds the capacity of an issue, the Editorial Board may determine the publication order. Manuscripts approved but not published in the current issue shall be given priority in the following issue, as a matter of policy.

Article 12 (Review and Publication Fees)

• Upon manuscript submission, the review fee is temporarily waived. Exemptions may apply to early-career researchers (e.g., manuscripts derived from theses submitted within two years of degree completion) and to authors of special manuscripts solicited by the Association's Board of Directors.

• Manuscripts accepted for publication shall be subject to a publication fee. Authors exempt from the review fee shall also be exempt from the publication fee.
  • Manuscripts supported by research funding: KRW 300,000
  • Manuscripts without research funding: KRW 200,000
  • Manuscripts exceeding the standard length of 20 pages: an additional KRW 10,000 per printed page. Publication fees may be waived for authors of special manuscripts solicited by the Association's Board of Directors and in other cases as determined by the Editorial Board.
• Offprints of individual articles are not provided.

Article 13 (Proofreading)
Proofreading of manuscripts shall, in principle, be the responsibility of the submitting author.

Article 14 (Copyright)

• The copyright of all articles published in The Journal of Private Tutoring Research shall belong to the Korean Association of Private Tutoring Studies.
• Authors of accepted manuscripts shall submit a Copyright Transfer Agreement.

Article 15 (Author Ethics)

• The Journal of Private Tutoring Research defines fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, duplicate submission, and duplicate publication during the processes of research planning, conduct, review, and reporting as research misconduct, and may take measures such as retraction of published articles and prohibition of future submissions.
• All authors shall submit a Research Ethics Compliance Confirmation Form together with their manuscript

Supplementary Provision

Article 1 (Effective Date) — These regulations shall take effect from May 1, 2023.
